At First Student, our Maintenance Supervisors play a key role in keeping our fleet safe, reliable, and ready for service. This position oversees the day-to-day maintenance operation while remaining actively involved in the diagnosis, repair, and overhaul of buses and related equipment.

The Maintenance Supervisor leads the shop team, coordinates vehicle availability with operations, and ensures all maintenance work meets company, state, and federal requirements.

Pay: $70,000 - $80,000/year based on experience and qualifications

Key Responsibilities

Schedule and oversee preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, and other fleet maintenance activities.
Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues involving diesel engines, buses, and related equipment.
Perform hands-on maintenance and repair work as needed.
Coordinate vehicle availability with dispatch, the Maintenance Manager, and other operations personnel.
Plan and distribute daily work assignments based on shop priorities and operational needs.
Delegate responsibilities, monitor performance, and provide direction and support to maintenance employees.
Assist with personnel matters, including hiring, promotions, performance management, and disciplinary recommendations, subject to management review and approval.
Ensure day-to-day compliance with company policies and all applicable state and federal requirements.
Review repair orders for accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation.
Work closely with location leadership to provide updates on fleet condition, maintenance priorities, staffing, and budget needs.
Order parts, fuel, and outside repair services when required.
Oversee vehicle fueling and related maintenance support activities.
Coordinate building or grounds services when assigned.
Identify opportunities to improve shop productivity, operating efficiency, safety, and vehicle reliability.
Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Technical or vocational training preferred.
Valid CDL with all required endorsements.
At least three years of hands-on mechanical and supervisory experience.
Experience repairing and maintaining diesel engines, buses, or other heavy-duty vehicles preferred.
Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Ability to lead employees, organize workloads, and manage competing priorities.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Basic computer and maintenance-recordkeeping skills.
Ability to lift approximately 20 to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

This position works primarily in a maintenance shop environment and is regularly exposed to dust, dirt, grease, noise, and other conditions associated with vehicle repair.

The Maintenance Supervisor must be able to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and work underneath vehicles, including while lying on a mechanic\'s dolly. The position requires regular hands-on work involving buses and maintenance equipment.

Minimum Education or Certifications Required

High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair (preferred)
Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required (or expected within 3 months of hire)
State inspection license (if required)
ASE Certification preferred. Must participate in ASE testing program (expected to have 6 ASE within 6 months of hire)

Minimum Experience or Skills Required

Advanced mechanical aptitude and 5 years of automotive or diesel repair experience (preferred) or equivalent education and experience
Adhere to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards
Valid driver\'s license
Advanced problem-solving ability
Advanced computer skills
Comfortable using hand tools
Excellent customer service skills and communication skills
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Maintain an organized shop and clean work environment
Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
Making sure vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers
Possess adequate mechanic tool inventory to complete all assigned duties and maintained in a clean and safe manner

About the Diesel Technician Position

As a Diesel Technician II with First Student, you will perform preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repair work on school buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles.

You will work independently on routine repairs while partnering with senior technicians and maintenance leadership on more complex mechanical issues. Your work will directly support the safety, reliability, and daily availability of the fleet serving students throughout the community.

Diesel Technician Key Responsibilities Include:

Ensure vehicles are properly maintained and safe for our passengers.
