About the Lead Diesel Technician Position

As a Lead Diesel Technician at First Student, you will help deliver excellence by leading the comprehensive preventive maintenance program, providing ongoing technician development, and streamlining operational practices.

Other job duties include:

Oversee complex vehicle diagnostics and repairs; perform road tests when needed.
Maintain advanced knowledge of engines, emissions, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, electrical, and HVAC systems for preventive and repair maintenance.
Supervise shop technicians, conduct daily huddles, training, performance evaluations, and assist with hiring decisions.
Manage inventory control, approve expenses within scope, schedule fleet maintenance, and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Conduct inspections, monitor performance, and maintain adherence to federal/state standards.
Work closely with management on maintenance status, budgets, and special projects.
Participate in ASE certification program.
Perform hands-on work activities as needed.

Lead Diesel Technician Qualifications

At least 5 years of diesel or automotive maintenance & repair experience or technical school education.
Previous experience in a lead technician, supervisor, or other management role is preferred.
Valid driver\'s license required; Willingness to obtain CDL while employed - Paid company training provided.
PA State Inspection License or ability to obtain one.
Strong computer skills.
Possess a mechanic\'s tool set.
ASE certifications are preferred.

About the Diesel Technician Position

As a Diesel Technician with First Student, you will help maintain and repair school buses to ensure safety and reliability.

Diesel Technician key responsibilities include:

Ensure vehicles are maintained and safe for our passengers.
Diagnose and perform all phases of vehicle maintenance including the repair of brakes and brake inspections, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches and other repairs.
Perform preventive maintenance (PMs), safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections.

Ensure vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers by performing limited repairs with moderate supervision on basic and advanced maintenance such as replacement of light bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, batteries, check fluid levels, change fluids and filters and lubricate components.
Perform mechanical repairs under moderate supervision including the repair of brakes and brake inspections, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches and other repairs.
Maintain records of all maintenance work completed on vehicles including parts and supplies used. Ensure that work orders are completed properly and accurately. Maintain parts usage records and order repair parts from designated suppliers
Assist Tech III with preventative maintenance (PM\'s), safety maintenance inspections and annual maintenance inspections at prescribed intervals of time and usage
Remove and replace engine, transmission and differential assemblies with Maintenance Technician III supervision.
Diagnoses and performs accurately all phases of vehicle and equipment repair under moderate supervision.
Notify supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken
Evaluates completed work prior to release and seeks approval where required
Assist with road calls and emergency services as necessary
Adhere to FirstGroup standards, policies and procedures
Moves vehicles safely between job and work area
Repair and maintain all shop equipment
Cleans vehicles as requested or required
Other responsibility as requested or required

Minimum Education or Certifications Required

High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair (preferred)
Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required (or expected within 3 months of hire)
State inspection license (if required)
ASE Certification preferred. Must participate in ASE testing program within 1 year (expected to have 3 ASE within 12 months of hire)

Minimum Experience or Skills Required

Intermediate mechanical aptitude and 3 years of automotive or diesel repair experience (preferred) or equivalent education and experience
Adhere to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards
Valid driver\'s license
Intermediate problem-solving ability
Intermediate computer skills
Comfortable using hand tools
Strong customer service skills and communication skills
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Maintain an organized shop and clean work environment
Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
Making sure vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers
Possess adequate mechanic tool inventory to complete all assigned duties and maintained in a clean and safe manner

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Maintenance Shop environment with dust, dirt and grease conditions
Ability to work under all weather conditions
Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
Ability to work in a crouched position or on back, lying on mechanic\'s creeper, beneath motor vehicle equipment

This may include but is not limited to tire maintenance, fulfilling service calls for repair, conducting visual inspections of vehicles and related work as assigned. Performs work under minimal supervision. Handles more advanced issues and problems and may refer more complex issues to higher-level staff. All work is performed with a commitment to safety. May mentor or provide informal guidance to Technician I.In the state of Washington, this position is considered a safety-sensitive position and is therefore subject to drug and alcohol testing, including cannabis.$28.45/hr based on union CBAMajor Responsibilities

Ensure vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers by performing limited repairs with moderate supervision on basic and advanced maintenance such as replacement of light bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, batteries, check fluid levels, change fluids and filters and lubricate components.
Perform mechanical repairs under moderate supervision including the repair of brakes and brake inspections, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches and other repairs.
Maintain records of all maintenance work completed on vehicles including parts and supplies used. Ensure that work orders are completed properly and accurately. Maintain parts usage records and order repair parts from designated suppliers
Assist Tech III with preventative maintenance (PM\'s), safety maintenance inspections and annual maintenance inspections at prescribed intervals of time and usage
Remove and replace engine, transmission and differential assemblies with Maintenance Technician III supervision.
Diagnoses and performs accurately all phases of vehicle and equipment repair under moderate supervision.
Notify supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken
Evaluates completed work prior to release and seeks approval where required
Assist with road calls and emergency services as necessary
Adhere to FirstGroup standards, policies and procedures
Moves vehicles safely between job and work area
Repair and maintain all shop equipment
Cleans vehicles as requested or required
Other responsibility as requested or required

Minimum Education or Certifications Required

High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair (preferred)
Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required (or expected within 3 months of hire)
State inspection license (if required)
ASE Certification preferred. Must participate in ASE testing program within 1 year (expected to have 3 ASE within 12 months of hire)

Minimum Experience or Skills Required

Intermediate mechanical aptitude and 3 years of automotive or diesel repair experience (preferred) or equivalent education and experience
Adhere to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards
Valid driver\'s license
Intermediate problem-solving ability
Intermediate computer skills
Comfortable using hand tools
Strong customer service skills and communication skills
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Maintain an organized shop and clean work environment
Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
Making sure vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers
Possess adequate mechanic tool inventory to complete all assigned duties and maintained in a clean and safe manner

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Maintenance Shop environment with dust, dirt and grease conditions
Ability to work under all weather conditions
Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
Ability to work in a crouched position or on back, lying on mechanic\'s creeper, beneath motor vehicle equipment
