Perform mechanical repairs under minimal supervision including the repair of brakes and brake inspections, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches and other repairs.
Maintain records of all maintenance work completed on vehicles including parts and supplies used. Ensure that work orders are completed properly and accurately. Maintain parts usage records and order repair parts from designated suppliers.
Diagnoses and performs accurately all phases of vehicle and equipment repair under minimal supervision. May perform diagnostic tests utilizing a computer and manufacturer\'s software to determine mechanical defects.
Lead preventative maintenance (PM\'s), safety maintenance inspections and annual maintenance inspections at prescribed intervals of time and usage
Remove, overhaul and reinstallation of mechanical components with minimal Tech in Charge supervision
Notify supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken
Evaluates completed work prior to release and seeks approval where required
Leads road calls and emergency services as necessary
Adhere to FirstGroup standards, policies and procedures
Moves vehicles safely between job and work area
Repair and maintain all shop equipment
Other responsibilities as requested or required

Minimum Education or Certifications Required

High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair (preferred)
Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required (or expected within 3 months of hire)
State inspection license (if required)
ASE Certification preferred. Must participate in ASE testing program (expected to have 6 ASE within 6 months of hire)

Minimum Experience or Skills Required

Advanced mechanical aptitude and 5 years of automotive or diesel repair experience (preferred) or equivalent education and experience
Adhere to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards
Valid driver\'s license
Advanced problem-solving ability
Advanced computer skills
Comfortable using hand tools
Excellent customer service skills and communication skills
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Maintain an organized shop and clean work environment
Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
Making sure vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers
Possess adequate mechanic tool inventory to complete all assigned duties and maintained in a clean and safe manner

As a Technician II, you will perform routine and advanced maintenance and repair work on buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles. This is a hands-on position for an experienced automotive or diesel technician who can complete repairs with moderate supervision, troubleshoot mechanical issues, and support preventative maintenance and inspection work.

Your Responsibilities

As a Technician II, you will:

Perform routine and advanced maintenance on buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles
Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment issues with moderate supervision
Complete repairs involving brakes, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drivetrains, transmission clutches, and related systems
Replace bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, batteries, filters, fluids, and other components
Inspect tires and complete tire maintenance and related repairs
Assist Technician III employees with preventative maintenance services, safety inspections, and annual vehicle inspections
Remove and replace engines, transmissions, and differential assemblies under Technician III supervision
Assist with road calls and emergency repairs as needed
Identify potentially unsafe equipment and notify management of the issue and corrective action taken
Review completed work before vehicles are returned to service and obtain approval when required
Accurately complete work orders and document repairs, parts, and supplies used
Maintain parts usage records and order repair parts from approved suppliers
Safely move vehicles between parking, service, and work areas

What We Are Looking For

Approximately three years of automotive or diesel repair experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience
Intermediate mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
Experience completing mechanical repairs with moderate supervision
High school diploma or GED preferred
Vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair preferred
Valid driver\'s license

Diesel Technician II

Your Responsibilities

As a Technician II, you will:

Perform routine and advanced maintenance on buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles
Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment issues with moderate supervision
Complete repairs involving brakes, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drivetrains, transmission clutches, and related systems
Replace bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, batteries, filters, fluids, and other components
Inspect tires and complete tire maintenance and related repairs
Assist Technician III employees with preventative maintenance services, safety inspections, and annual vehicle inspections
Remove and replace engines, transmissions, and differential assemblies under Technician III supervision
Assist with road calls and emergency repairs as needed
Identify potentially unsafe equipment and notify management of the issue and corrective action taken
Review completed work before vehicles are returned to service and obtain approval when required
Accurately complete work orders and document repairs, parts, and supplies used
Maintain parts usage records and order repair parts from approved suppliers
Safely move vehicles between parking, service, and work areas
Repair and maintain shop tools and equipment
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
Clean vehicles when requested
Provide informal guidance or support to Technician I employees
Perform other duties as assigned

What We Are Looking For

Approximately three years of automotive or diesel repair experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience
Intermediate mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
Experience completing mechanical repairs with moderate supervision
High school diploma or GED preferred
Vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair preferred
Valid driver\'s license
Class B CDL with passenger endorsement, or the ability to obtain one within three months of hire
State vehicle inspection license where required
ASE certifications preferred
Ability to participate in the company\'s ASE testing program within one year of hire
Ability to obtain three ASE certifications within 12 months of hire
Knowledge of state DOT vehicle inspection and safety standards
Working knowledge of computerized diagnostic and maintenance systems
Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
Strong communication and customer service skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team
Reliable and predictable attendance
Personal mechanic tool inventory sufficient to complete assigned repairs

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This position works in a maintenance shop environment that may include dust, dirt, grease, noise, and changing weather conditions.

Technicians must be able to:

Lift at least 50 pounds
Work in crouched, kneeling, standing, and lying positions
Work underneath vehicles using a mechanic\'s creeper
Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
Safely operate vehicles, tools, and maintenance equipment

This position is subject to applicable DOT drug testing and physical requirements.

About the Role

The Fueler / Utility Worker supports daily paratransit operations by fueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, maintaining accurate fuel records, inspecting vehicles for visible damage, and helping keep the yard, fuel island, buildings, and grounds clean and safe.

What You\'ll Do

Open gates and prepare the parking lot and fuel island for daily operations
Check paratransit parking areas to ensure vehicles can be dispatched safely and on time
Reposition vehicles in the yard as needed to maintain traffic flow
Fuel paratransit vehicles and complete accurate stick and meter readings
Maintain fuel-related records, including:
- Bulk Fuel Receiving Reports
- Fuel Variance Reports
- Month-End Closing Reports
- Meter Calibration Reports
Notify management when fuel deliveries are needed
Follow proper procedures before, during, and after fuel deliveries
Check and fill vehicle fluids, including oil, antifreeze, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid
Inspect belts and report any issues to the appropriate maintenance contact
Check tires twice per week for damage and proper air pressure
Report tire damage or vehicle damage immediately to the shop or management team
Maintain required spill-barrel inventory and assist with spill containment procedures when needed
Keep the fuel island stocked with supplies needed for daily vehicle checks
Clean vehicle interiors and exteriors as needed to maintain fleet cleanliness
Assist with light building and grounds maintenance, including yard cleanliness, weeds, grass, and assigned projects
Complete additional tasks as assigned by management

What We\'re Looking For

High school diploma or equivalent
Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
Strong attention to detail when completing logs, reports, and inspections
Ability to communicate professionally with drivers, managers, maintenance staff, and operations team members

Check paratransit parking areas to ensure vehicles can be dispatched safely and on time
Reposition vehicles in the yard as needed to maintain traffic flow
Fuel paratransit vehicles and complete accurate stick and meter readings
Maintain fuel-related records, including:
- Bulk Fuel Receiving Reports
- Fuel Variance Reports
- Month-End Closing Reports
- Meter Calibration Reports
Notify management when fuel deliveries are needed
Follow proper procedures before, during, and after fuel deliveries
Check and fill vehicle fluids, including oil, antifreeze, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid
Inspect belts and report any issues to the appropriate maintenance contact
Check tires twice per week for damage and proper air pressure
Report tire damage or vehicle damage immediately to the shop or management team
Maintain required spill-barrel inventory and assist with spill containment procedures when needed
Keep the fuel island stocked with supplies needed for daily vehicle checks
Clean vehicle interiors and exteriors as needed to maintain fleet cleanliness
Assist with light building and grounds maintenance, including yard cleanliness, weeds, grass, and assigned projects
Complete additional tasks as assigned by management

Physical Requirements

This role requires regular outdoor and hands-on work. Candidates should be comfortable with:

Working in wet, cold, hot, or seasonal weather conditions
Standing for extended periods
Bending, kneeling, crouching, squatting, and stooping during vehicle checks and inspections
Using hands and fingers to complete paperwork, inspections, and basic tasks
Hearing, speaking, and seeing clearly enough to perform job duties safely
Writing clear, legible reports and records
Moving around a vehicle yard and fuel island throughout the shift

Tech III / Technician in Charge

Location: Hicksville, NY
Pay: Starting at $36.07 per hour

First Student is hiring an experienced Diesel Tech III / Technician in Charge to help maintain our fleet of school buses and other vehicles in Hicksville, NY.

This is a senior, hands-on technician role for someone who can independently diagnose and complete complex repairs. While this is not a formal management or supervisor position, the Tech III will help mentor newer technicians, provide technical guidance, and support the overall workflow of the shop.

At First Student, our technicians play an essential role in ensuring our vehicles are safe, reliable, and ready to transport our passengers each day.

As a Tech III / Technician in Charge, you will:

Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and vehicle performance issues with minimal supervision
Perform preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections
Repair brakes, engines, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, clutches, and related systems
Use diagnostic computers and manufacturer software to identify mechanical and electrical defects
Remove, overhaul, and reinstall major mechanical components
Lead road calls and provide emergency repair services when necessary
Review completed repairs to ensure vehicles are safe before returning them to service
Maintain accurate work orders, parts usage records, and maintenance documentation
Identify potentially unsafe equipment and communicate required corrective actions
Mentor and provide informal technical guidance to Technician I and Technician II employees
Help maintain an organized, clean, and safe shop environment
Safely move vehicles between work and parking areas
Repair and maintain shop equipment
Follow all First Student safety standards, policies, and procedures
Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Five or more years of automotive or diesel repair experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
High school diploma or GED preferred
Vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair preferred
Advanced mechanical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills
Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required or ability to obtain within three months of hire
State inspection license, where required
ASE certifications preferred
Ability to participate in the ASE testing program and obtain six ASE certifications within six months of hire
Valid driver\'s license
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong communication and customer-service skills
Comfortable using hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and computer-based repair software
Personal mechanic tool inventory adequate to complete assigned repairs
Reliable attendance and the ability to maintain an organized work environment

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
Ability to work in crouched, kneeling, and lying positions beneath vehicles
Ability to work in a maintenance shop environment that may include dust, dirt, grease, and varying temperatures
