About the Position:

As a Technician at First Student, your day-to-day work ensures our vehicles are maintained and safe for our passengers. You\'ll complete both routine and advanced repairs, handle emergency service calls, and work under moderate supervision. You may also provide mentorship to entry-level technicians.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform maintenance and repairs on vehicles including:
- Brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, and transmissions
- Electrical components, fluid systems, filters, belts, batteries, and hoses
Conduct preventive maintenance (PMs), DOT inspections, and diagnostic troubleshooting
Maintain detailed service records, complete accurate work orders, and track parts usage
Support emergency roadside service calls when needed
Clean vehicles and maintain the shop environment
Safely move vehicles around the yard or between work areas
Repair and maintain shop tools and equipment
Other duties as assigned by management

Ensure vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers by performing limited repairs with moderate supervision on basic and advanced maintenance such as replacement of light bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, batteries, check fluid levels, change fluids and filters and lubricate components.
Perform mechanical repairs under moderate supervision including the repair of brakes and brake inspections, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches and other repairs.
Maintain records of all maintenance work completed on vehicles including parts and supplies used. Ensure that work orders are completed properly and accurately. Maintain parts usage records and order repair parts from designated suppliers
Assist Tech III with preventative maintenance (PM\'s), safety maintenance inspections and annual maintenance inspections at prescribed intervals of time and usage
Remove and replace engine, transmission and differential assemblies with Maintenance Technician III supervision.
Diagnoses and performs accurately all phases of vehicle and equipment repair under moderate supervision.
Notify supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken
Evaluates completed work prior to release and seeks approval where required
Assist with road calls and emergency services as necessary
Adhere to FirstGroup standards, policies and procedures
Moves vehicles safely between job and work area
Repair and maintain all shop equipment
Cleans vehicles as requested or required
Other responsibility as requested or required

Minimum Education or Certifications Required

High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair (preferred)
Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required (or expected within 3 months of hire)
State inspection license (if required)
ASE Certification preferred. Must participate in ASE testing program within 1 year (expected to have 3 ASE within 12 months of hire)

Minimum Experience or Skills Required

Intermediate mechanical aptitude and 3 years of automotive or diesel repair experience (preferred) or equivalent education and experience
Adhere to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards
Valid driver\'s license
Intermediate problem-solving ability
Intermediate computer skills
Comfortable using hand tools
Strong customer service skills and communication skills
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Maintain an organized shop and clean work environment
Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
Making sure vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers
Possess adequate mechanic tool inventory to complete all assigned duties and maintained in a clean and safe manner

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Maintenance Shop environment with dust, dirt and grease conditions
Ability to work under all weather conditions

Ensure vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers by performing limited repairs with moderate supervision on basic and advanced maintenance such as replacement of light bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, batteries, check fluid levels, change fluids and filters and lubricate components.
Perform mechanical repairs under moderate supervision including the repair of brakes and brake inspections, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches and other repairs.
Maintain records of all maintenance work completed on vehicles including parts and supplies used. Ensure that work orders are completed properly and accurately. Maintain parts usage records and order repair parts from designated suppliers
Assist Tech III with preventative maintenance (PM\'s), safety maintenance inspections and annual maintenance inspections at prescribed intervals of time and usage
Remove and replace engine, transmission and differential assemblies with Maintenance Technician III supervision.
Diagnoses and performs accurately all phases of vehicle and equipment repair under moderate supervision.
Notify supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken
Evaluates completed work prior to release and seeks approval where required
Assist with road calls and emergency services as necessary

Moves vehicles safely between job and work area

Minimum Education or Certifications Required

High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair (preferred)

Key Responsibilities:

Perform maintenance and repairs on vehicles including:
- Brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, and transmissions
- Electrical components, fluid systems, filters, belts, batteries, and hoses
Conduct preventive maintenance (PMs), DOT inspections, and diagnostic troubleshooting
Maintain detailed service records, complete accurate work orders, and track parts usage
Support emergency roadside service calls when needed
Clean vehicles and maintain the shop environment
Safely move vehicles around the yard or between work areas
Repair and maintain shop tools and equipment
Other duties as assigned by management

Maintenance shop environment with dust, dirt, grease, and various weather exposure
Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs and work in crouched or prone positions beneath vehicles

About the Gasoline-powered vehicle Mechanic Position

As a gas-powered vehicle Mechanic with First Student, you will help maintain and repair Ford E-350, Ford E-450, Ford Transit, and Ford 2024 EV. All with Braun wheelchair lifts and ensure vehicle readiness & safety. Other major job duties include:

Assist with preventive maintenance (PMs), safety inspections, and annual DOT maintenance inspections.
Diagnose and perform all phases of vehicle and equipment repair including brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, & transmissions.
Ensure work orders are completed accurately.
Assist with mobile emergency services.

Mechanic Qualifications

Valid driver\'s license required; Willingness to obtain CDL while employed - We train!
At least 1 year of automotive or diesel maintenance & repair experience or technical school education

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Incumbent must be able to move about the office and between floors; utilize standard office equipment; access filing system/cabinets; and communicate effectively and efficiently in person or by telephone.

Physically fit to board transit vehicles and inspect both vehicles and facilities as needed

About the Role

First Student is hiring a NYS 19-A Examiner / Driver Compliance Specialist to support driver qualification, safety compliance, training, testing, and regulatory documentation for our transportation operations.

This role is responsible for ensuring drivers remain fully compliant with New York State DMV Article 19-A, SED, and NYC DOE requirements. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, comfortable working with drivers and managers, and experienced in a regulated transportation or school bus environment.

What You\'ll Do

As the Driver Compliance Specialist, you will help maintain safe, compliant, and efficient transportation operations by managing driver compliance requirements at the location level.

Responsibilities include:

Serve as a certified NYS 19-A Examiner
Conduct required pre-employment, annual, and biennial driver qualification reviews
Administer required driver testing, evaluations, and compliance checks
Train and evaluate drivers on safe driving procedures and regulatory requirements
Maintain compliance with NYS DMV, SED, and NYC DOE requirements
Manage driver qualification files and ensure documentation is accurate, complete, and current
Monitor driver compliance status and follow up on missing or expired documentation
Support audits, inspections, regulatory reviews, and corrective action processes
Maintain contract compliance and ensure adherence to legal and operational requirements
Prepare compliance reports, schedules, management reports, and official correspondence
Enter, update, and retrieve data from fleet and compliance management systems
Communicate with drivers, monitors, managers, customers, vendors, and internal departments
Support additional safety, compliance, and operational needs as required

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent
Valid NYS 19-A Examiner License
Minimum of 2 years of administrative, office, compliance, transportation, or operations experience
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office
Ability to maintain accurate records and confidential information
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent attention to detail and follow-up skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

SBDI certification strongly preferred
Experience in school transportation, driver compliance, safety training, or regulated transportation operations
Experience working with NYS DMV, SED, or NYC DOE compliance requirements
Experience using fleet, compliance, HR, or driver management systems

Work Environment

This position requires the ability to work in an office and transportation facility environment. The role may require walking throughout the facility, accessing filing systems, using standard office equipment, and communicating in person, by phone, and electronically.
