Diesel Technician III
Pay: $30 per hour
At First Student, our Technicians are responsible for keeping our vehicles maintained, reliable, and safe for the students and communities we serve.
As a Technician III, you will perform advanced diagnostic, maintenance, and repair work on buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles with minimal supervision. This is a hands-on position for an experienced automotive or diesel technician who can independently troubleshoot complex mechanical issues, lead preventative maintenance work, and support less-experienced technicians when needed.

Your Responsibilities
As a Technician III, you will:
Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and vehicle equipment issues with minimal supervision
Perform repairs to brakes, engines, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, clutches, and related systems
Complete routine maintenance, including replacing belts, hoses, batteries, bulbs, fuses, filters, fluids, and other components
Lead preventative maintenance services, safety inspections, and annual vehicle inspections
Use computerized diagnostic equipment and manufacturer software to identify mechanical defects
Remove, overhaul, repair, and reinstall mechanical components
Complete road calls and emergency repairs as needed
Review completed work before vehicles are returned to service
Identify unsafe equipment and communicate required corrective action to management
Accurately complete work orders and document all repairs, parts, and supplies used
Maintain parts usage records and order parts from approved suppliers
Safely move vehicles between parking, service, and work areas
Repair and maintain shop tools and equipment
Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment
Mentor or provide informal guidance to Technician I and Technician II employees
Serve as a Shift Foreman when assigned
Perform other duties as required
What We Are Looking For
Approximately five years of automotive or diesel repair experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience
Advanced mechanical and diagnostic ability
Experience completing repairs independently with minimal supervision
High school diploma or GED preferred
Vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair preferred
Valid driver's license
Class B CDL with passenger endorsement, or the ability to obtain one within three months of hire
State vehicle inspection license where required
ASE certifications preferred
Ability to participate in the company's ASE testing program and obtain six ASE certifications within six months of hire
Knowledge of state DOT motor vehicle inspection and safety standards
Ability to use computerized diagnostic equipment and maintenance systems
Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
Strong troubleshooting, communication, and customer service skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team
Reliable and predictable attendance
Personal mechanic tool inventory sufficient to complete assigned repairs
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
This position works in a maintenance shop environment that may include dust, dirt, grease, noise, and changing weather conditions.
Technicians must be able to:
Lift at least 50 pounds
Work in crouched, kneeling, standing, and lying positions
Work underneath vehicles using a mechanic's creeper
Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
Safely operate vehicles, tools, and maintenance equipment
This position is subject to applicable DOT drug testing and physical requirements.
