Tech III / Technician in Charge

Location: Hicksville, NY
Pay: Starting at $36.07 per hour

First Student is hiring an experienced Diesel Tech III / Technician in Charge to help maintain our fleet of school buses and other vehicles in Hicksville, NY.

This is a senior, hands-on technician role for someone who can independently diagnose and complete complex repairs. While this is not a formal management or supervisor position, the Tech III will help mentor newer technicians, provide technical guidance, and support the overall workflow of the shop.

As a Tech III / Technician in Charge, you will:

Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and vehicle performance issues with minimal supervision
Perform preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections
Repair brakes, engines, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, clutches, and related systems
Use diagnostic computers and manufacturer software to identify mechanical and electrical defects
Remove, overhaul, and reinstall major mechanical components
Lead road calls and provide emergency repair services when necessary
Review completed repairs to ensure vehicles are safe before returning them to service
Maintain accurate work orders, parts usage records, and maintenance documentation
Identify potentially unsafe equipment and communicate required corrective actions
Mentor and provide informal technical guidance to Technician I and Technician II employees
Help maintain an organized, clean, and safe shop environment
Safely move vehicles between work and parking areas
Repair and maintain shop equipment
Follow all First Student safety standards, policies, and procedures
Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Five or more years of automotive or diesel repair experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
High school diploma or GED preferred
Vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair preferred
Advanced mechanical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills
Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required or ability to obtain within three months of hire
State inspection license, where required
ASE certifications preferred
Ability to participate in the ASE testing program and obtain six ASE certifications within six months of hire
Valid driver\'s license
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong communication and customer-service skills
Comfortable using hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and computer-based repair software
Personal mechanic tool inventory adequate to complete assigned repairs
Reliable attendance and the ability to maintain an organized work environment

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
Ability to work in crouched, kneeling, and lying positions beneath vehicles

Assist Tech II or III with preventative maintenance (PM\'s), safety maintenance inspections and annual maintenance inspections at prescribed intervals of time and usage
Assist in the performance of mechanical repairs including the repair of brakes, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches and other repairs.
Maintain records of all maintenance work completed on vehicles including parts and supplies used. Ensure that work orders are completed properly and accurately
Diagnoses and performs accurately all phases of vehicle and equipment repair under direct supervision.
Evaluates completed work prior to release and seeks approval where required
Notify supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken
Moves vehicles safely between job and work area
Assist with road calls and emergency services as necessary
Adhere to FirstGroup standards, policies and procedures
Cleans vehicles as requested or required
Other responsibility as requested or required

Minimum Education or Certifications Required

High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair (preferred)
Class B CDL with passenger endorsement highly preferred to perform test drives or assist with road call response (expected within 3 months of hire, exceptions can be submitted for approval by Maintenance Leadership.
ASE Certification preferred. Must participate in ASE testing program within 1 year (expected to have 1 ASE within 24 months of hire)

Minimum Experience or Skills Required

Basic mechanical aptitude and 0-1 years of automotive or diesel repair experience (preferred) or equivalent education and experience
Adhere to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards
Valid driver\'s license
Basic problem-solving ability
Basic computer skills

About the Diesel Technician Position

As a Diesel Technician III with First Student, you will serve as an advanced member of the maintenance team, performing complex diagnostics, repairs, preventative maintenance, and inspections on school buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles.

Strong experience diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, electrical systems, and related components.

First Student is now hiring a Diesel Technician I for our shop serving Yonkers Public Schools, Mount Vernon City School District, City School District of New Rochelle, and New York City Public Schools in Yonkers, New York!

Hours/Schedule: Monday-Friday, full-time second shift, 2:00 PM-10:00 PM
Union: TWU Local 100

About the Diesel Technician Position

Diesel Technician Key Responsibilities Include:

Ensure vehicles are properly maintained and safe for our passengers.
Perform basic maintenance and limited repairs, including replacing light bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, and batteries.
Check fluid levels and change fluids, filters, and lubricants.
Assist Tech II and Tech III employees with preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections.
Assist with repairs involving brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmission clutches, and other vehicle systems.
Perform vehicle and equipment repairs under direct supervision.
Conduct visual inspections and identify potential maintenance or safety concerns.
Complete work orders accurately, including documenting parts and supplies used.
Evaluate completed work and obtain approval before vehicles are released.
Notify supervisors of potentially unsafe equipment and any corrective action taken.
Move vehicles safely between work and service areas.
Assist with road calls and mobile emergency repair services when needed.
Clean vehicles as requested or required.
Maintain an organized shop and clean work environment.
Follow all First Student safety standards, policies, and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Diesel Technician Qualifications

Basic mechanical aptitude and up to one year of automotive or diesel maintenance and repair experience preferred, or equivalent technical school education and experience.
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair preferred.
Basic vehicle diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
Valid driver\'s license required.
CDL Class B with Passenger endorsement preferred.
Ability to obtain a CDL Class B with Passenger endorsement within three months of employment; company-paid training is provided.
ASE certification preferred.
Willingness to participate in the ASE certification program within one year of hire.
Expected to obtain at least one ASE certification within 24 months of hire.
Possession of a basic mechanic\'s tool set sufficient to perform assigned duties.
Comfortable using hand tools.
Basic computer skills.
Strong customer service and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and full attendance.
Commitment to maintaining safe and reliable vehicles for our customers.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Ability to work in a maintenance shop environment with dust, dirt, and grease.
Ability to work under varying weather conditions.
Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
Ability to work in crouched, kneeling, standing, and lying positions.
Ability to work beneath vehicles while using a mechanic\'s creeper.
