Service Employee
The Service Employer maintains and fuels all school buses, activity, and commercial buses in conjunction with First Student\'s Maintenance Department: dispenses fuel, checks oil, maintains accurate stick and meter readings, stocks required supplies and equipment, and coordinates the flow of buses to ensure safe operation. Performs light maintenance as necessary to buildings and grounds.

As a Service Employee, your major responsibilities will be to:

• Opens the gates to the lot and checks bus parking areas to ensure all can be dispatched in a timely manner. Re-positions any buses that may impede the traffic in the yard
• Maintains accurate records and completes Bulk Fuel Receiving Report, Fuel Variance Report, Closing Month-end Report and Meter Calibration Report
• Notifies the Location Manager or designee when a fuel delivery is required and ensures that accurate stick readings are taken before and after delivery
• Checks and fills the oil, antifreeze, power steering, transmission fluid, brake fluid, windshield washer fluid and belts on buses being fueled
• Performs light interior and exterior maintenance on buses as required
• Performs any other management requests or directives as requested

About the Role

The Fueler / Utility Worker supports daily paratransit operations by fueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, maintaining accurate fuel records, inspecting vehicles for visible damage, and helping keep the yard, fuel island, buildings, and grounds clean and safe.

This is a hands-on, outdoor operations role that helps ensure paratransit vehicles are ready to dispatch on time each day.

What You\'ll Do

Open gates and prepare the parking lot and fuel island for daily operations
Check paratransit parking areas to ensure vehicles can be dispatched safely and on time
Reposition vehicles in the yard as needed to maintain traffic flow
Fuel paratransit vehicles and complete accurate stick and meter readings
Maintain fuel-related records, including:
- Bulk Fuel Receiving Reports
- Fuel Variance Reports
- Month-End Closing Reports
- Meter Calibration Reports
Notify management when fuel deliveries are needed
Follow proper procedures before, during, and after fuel deliveries
Check and fill vehicle fluids, including oil, antifreeze, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid
Inspect belts and report any issues to the appropriate maintenance contact
Check tires twice per week for damage and proper air pressure
Report tire damage or vehicle damage immediately to the shop or management team

Clean vehicle interiors and exteriors as needed to maintain fleet cleanliness

Oversees all routing and scheduling of buses; dispatch buses and provide timely and accurate route and passenger information to drivers on route. Responsible for opening or closing the location, check the answering service for messages and receive calls from any drivers who will not be at work. Tracks daily attendance and communicates issues to the manager.
Accurately updates daily dispatch log including the status of vehicles and replacements, open routes, sub driver assignments and other on-going operations items. Record all late buses, breakdowns and accidents on the dispatch log. Information recorded will include time of occurrence, location of bus, route affected, bus involved and a detailed description of what steps are being taken to resolve the problem.
Collect all pre-trip inspection reports from drivers. Inspection reports will be documented, dated, and filed. Vehicles (buses) needing repairs shall be reported to the service department. Responsible for working with the Shop Manager with respect to scheduling buses for preventive maintenance (P.M.) service(s), reporting breakdowns, and discussing driver concerns regarding the fleet.
Shall assist in answering the telephone per telephone Standards and provide follow-up to questions or inquiries.
Performs other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Education or Certifications Required

High School diploma or equivalent. Appropriate vehicle license preferred.

Minimum Experience or Skills Required

5-7 years experience.
Basic knowledge of radio dispatch equipment, excellent communications and customer service skills.
Ability to work under time constraints and deadlines.
Problem solving and analytical abilities.
Previous terminal operations, dispatch, or driver experience.
Good computer skills

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Must be able to move about the office and between floors; utilize standard office equipment; access filing system/cabinets; and communicate effectively and efficiently in person or by telephone. Sitting for extended periods of time.

Oversees all routing and scheduling of buses; dispatch buses and provide timely and accurate route and passenger information to drivers on route. Reviews route change requests with drivers and submits appropriate paperwork for approval. Maintains an appropriate log to record the date of submission, change number and who the change was submitted to.
Monitors sign-in and sign-out times for each route and submits requests for changes as necessary. Adjusts route hours as necessary to ensure productivity and reduce overtime.
Demonstrates and promotes "Safety First" culture at the location. Responsible to broadcast daily safety messages during A.M. and P.M. route times. Works with the location safety personnel to develop meaningful safety messages.
Assigns drivers and, when necessary, monitors to routes. Where a "Bid" process is used, the dispatcher is responsible for posting routes and overseeing the "Bid" process.
Ensures that all routes (both AM and PM) are properly "dry" run prior to the start of service.
In the event that FIRST STUDENT, INC. is required to establish routes for a school district, this information shall be efficiently compiled, written, and submitted to the district officials within the time frames specified.
Responsible for opening or closing the location, check the answering service for messages and receive calls from any drivers who will not be at work. Tracks daily attendance and communicates issues to the manager.
Accurately updates daily dispatch log including the status of vehicles and replacements, open routes, sub driver assignments and other on-going operations items. Record all late buses, breakdowns and accidents on the dispatch log. Information recorded will include time of occurrence, location of bus, route affected, bus involved and a detailed description of what steps are being taken to resolve the problem.
Collect all pre-trip inspection reports from drivers. Inspection reports will be documented, dated, and filed. Vehicles (buses) needing repairs shall be reported to the service department. Responsible for working with the Shop Manager with respect to scheduling buses for preventive maintenance (P.M.) service(s), reporting breakdowns, and discussing driver concerns regarding the fleet.
Shall assist in answering the telephone per telephone Standards and provide follow-up to questions or inquiries.
Performs other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Education or Certifications Required

High School diploma or equivalent. Appropriate vehicle license preferred.

Minimum Experience or Skills Required

5-7 years experience.
Basic knowledge of radio dispatch equipment, excellent communications and customer service skills.
Ability to work under time constraints and deadlines.
Problem solving and analytical abilities.
Previous terminal operations, dispatch, or driver experience.
Good computer skills

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Must be able to move about the office and between floors; utilize standard office equipment; access filing system/cabinets; and communicate effectively and efficiently in person or by telephone. Sitting for extended periods of time.

Fleet Technician I

First Student is currently hiring a Fleet Technician I to join our maintenance team.

This is an entry-level fleet maintenance position supporting the inspection, repair, and preventive maintenance of our buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles. If you have basic mechanical experience, are comfortable working with tools, and want to build a career in fleet maintenance, this is an opportunity to develop your skills while working alongside experienced technicians.

About the Position

The Fleet Technician I helps keep First Student vehicles safe, reliable, and ready for service by performing routine maintenance and basic repairs.

This position works under direct supervision and handles basic maintenance and repair tasks while assisting more experienced technicians with preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and larger repairs.

You will also have the opportunity to continue developing your technical skills through hands-on experience, CDL training, and ASE certification.

Key Responsibilities

Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs including replacing light bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, and batteries
Check and maintain vehicle fluid levels, change fluids and filters, and lubricate components
Assist Technician II and Technician III employees with preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections
Assist with mechanical repairs involving brakes, suspension, drivetrains, transmission clutches, and other vehicle systems
Diagnose and complete basic vehicle and equipment repairs under direct supervision
Inspect completed work and obtain approval when required before vehicles are returned to service
Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and documentation of parts and supplies used
Identify potentially unsafe equipment and notify maintenance leadership of concerns and corrective actions
Move vehicles safely between work areas
Assist with road calls and emergency service when needed
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment
Clean vehicles when requested or required
Follow First Student safety standards, policies, procedures, and applicable DOT requirements
Perform additional maintenance duties as assigned

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED preferred
Vocational or technical training in automotive or vehicle repair preferred
0-1 years of automotive, diesel, fleet, or related mechanical repair experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Basic mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability
Comfortable using hand tools and basic shop equipment
Basic computer skills
Valid driver\'s license
Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team
Strong communication and customer service skills
Ability to maintain an organized and clean work environment
Reliable and predictable attendance
Basic mechanic hand tools sufficient to perform job requirements

CDL & ASE Development

Class B CDL with passenger endorsement is highly preferred
Employees are generally expected to obtain the required CDL within 3 months of hire, subject to approved exceptions from Maintenance Leadership
ASE certification is preferred
Employees are expected to participate in the ASE testing program within the first year
Employees are expected to obtain at least one ASE certification within 24 months of hire

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on maintenance position performed primarily in a fleet maintenance shop environment.

Employees must be able to:

At First Student, our Maintenance Supervisors play a key role in keeping our fleet safe, reliable, and ready for service. This position oversees the day-to-day maintenance operation while remaining actively involved in the diagnosis, repair, and overhaul of buses and related equipment.

The Maintenance Supervisor leads the shop team, coordinates vehicle availability with operations, and ensures all maintenance work meets company, state, and federal requirements.

Pay: $70,000 - $80,000/year based on experience and qualifications

Key Responsibilities

Schedule and oversee preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, and other fleet maintenance activities.
Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues involving diesel engines, buses, and related equipment.
Perform hands-on maintenance and repair work as needed.
Coordinate vehicle availability with dispatch, the Maintenance Manager, and other operations personnel.
Plan and distribute daily work assignments based on shop priorities and operational needs.
Delegate responsibilities, monitor performance, and provide direction and support to maintenance employees.
Assist with personnel matters, including hiring, promotions, performance management, and disciplinary recommendations, subject to management review and approval.
Ensure day-to-day compliance with company policies and all applicable state and federal requirements.
Review repair orders for accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation.
Work closely with location leadership to provide updates on fleet condition, maintenance priorities, staffing, and budget needs.
Order parts, fuel, and outside repair services when required.
Oversee vehicle fueling and related maintenance support activities.
Coordinate building or grounds services when assigned.
Identify opportunities to improve shop productivity, operating efficiency, safety, and vehicle reliability.
Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Technical or vocational training preferred.
Valid CDL with all required endorsements.
At least three years of hands-on mechanical and supervisory experience.
Experience repairing and maintaining diesel engines, buses, or other heavy-duty vehicles preferred.
Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Ability to lead employees, organize workloads, and manage competing priorities.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Basic computer and maintenance-recordkeeping skills.
Ability to lift approximately 20 to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

This position works primarily in a maintenance shop environment and is regularly exposed to dust, dirt, grease, noise, and other conditions associated with vehicle repair.

The Maintenance Supervisor must be able to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and work underneath vehicles, including while lying on a mechanic\'s dolly. The position requires regular hands-on work involving buses and maintenance equipment.
