Fleet Technician I

First Student is currently hiring a Fleet Technician I to join our maintenance team.

This is an entry-level fleet maintenance position supporting the inspection, repair, and preventive maintenance of our buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles. If you have basic mechanical experience, are comfortable working with tools, and want to build a career in fleet maintenance, this is an opportunity to develop your skills while working alongside experienced technicians.

About the Position

The Fleet Technician I helps keep First Student vehicles safe, reliable, and ready for service by performing routine maintenance and basic repairs.

This position works under direct supervision and handles basic maintenance and repair tasks while assisting more experienced technicians with preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and larger repairs.

You will also have the opportunity to continue developing your technical skills through hands-on experience, CDL training, and ASE certification.

Key Responsibilities

Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs including replacing light bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, and batteries
Check and maintain vehicle fluid levels, change fluids and filters, and lubricate components
Assist Technician II and Technician III employees with preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections
Assist with mechanical repairs involving brakes, suspension, drivetrains, transmission clutches, and other vehicle systems
Diagnose and complete basic vehicle and equipment repairs under direct supervision
Inspect completed work and obtain approval when required before vehicles are returned to service
Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and documentation of parts and supplies used
Identify potentially unsafe equipment and notify maintenance leadership of concerns and corrective actions
Move vehicles safely between work areas
Assist with road calls and emergency service when needed
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment
Clean vehicles when requested or required
Follow First Student safety standards, policies, procedures, and applicable DOT requirements
Perform additional maintenance duties as assigned

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED preferred
Vocational or technical training in automotive or vehicle repair preferred
0-1 years of automotive, diesel, fleet, or related mechanical repair experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Basic mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability
Comfortable using hand tools and basic shop equipment
Basic computer skills
Valid driver\'s license
Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team
Strong communication and customer service skills
Ability to maintain an organized and clean work environment
Reliable and predictable attendance
Basic mechanic hand tools sufficient to perform job requirements

CDL & ASE Development

Class B CDL with passenger endorsement is highly preferred
Employees are generally expected to obtain the required CDL within 3 months of hire, subject to approved exceptions from Maintenance Leadership
ASE certification is preferred
Employees are expected to participate in the ASE testing program within the first year
Employees are expected to obtain at least one ASE certification within 24 months of hire

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on maintenance position performed primarily in a fleet maintenance shop environment.

Employees must be able to:

Work in environments that may include dust, dirt, grease, noise, and changing temperatures
Work under varying weather conditions
Lift at least 50 pounds
Bend, kneel, crouch, and work underneath vehicles
Work while lying on a mechanic\'s creeper beneath vehicle equipment
Safely use hand tools, shop equipment, and vehicle maintenance equipment
Move throughout the shop and vehicle work areas as needed

First Student is hiring an experienced Fleet Tech in Charge to serve as the working lead for our Middle Island maintenance shop.

This is not a desk-only management position, and it is not an entry-level technician role. The Fleet Tech in Charge works alongside the maintenance team, performs advanced diagnostics and repairs, handles the shop\'s most difficult mechanical issues, and provides day-to-day direction to other technicians.

Candidates must have at least three years of professional or military automotive, diesel, commercial-fleet, or heavy-equipment repair experience. Candidates must also have previous experience serving as a lead technician, shop lead, foreperson, supervisor, or in a comparable role directing the work of other technicians.

Your Responsibilities

As a Technician II, you will:

What We Are Looking For

Approximately three years of automotive or diesel repair experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience

Valid driver\'s license
Class B CDL with passenger endorsement, or the ability to obtain one within three months of hire

About the Diesel Technician Position

As a Diesel Technician III with First Student, you will serve as an advanced member of the maintenance team, performing complex diagnostics, repairs, preventative maintenance, and inspections on school buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles.

You will work independently on advanced mechanical and electrical issues, support road-call and emergency repair needs, and help guide less-experienced technicians. Your technical expertise will directly support fleet safety, vehicle availability, regulatory compliance, and the reliable transportation of students throughout the community.

Diesel Technician Key Responsibilities Include:

Ensure vehicles are properly maintained and safe for our passengers.
Diagnose and perform all phases of vehicle maintenance and repair.
Perform advanced diagnostics on mechanical, electrical, engine, transmission, emissions, and related vehicle systems.
Repair brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmission clutches, engines, steering systems, and other major vehicle components.
Diagnose and repair electrical, starting, charging, lighting, and electronic control systems.
Perform preventative maintenance, safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections.
Identify mechanical and safety concerns before vehicles are returned to service.
Complete complex repairs accurately and efficiently.
Evaluate completed work and verify that repairs meet First Student and regulatory standards.
Complete work orders accurately, including all labor, parts, supplies, diagnostic findings, and corrective actions.
Notify maintenance leadership of potentially dangerous equipment and recommend corrective action.
Assist with road calls, breakdowns, and mobile emergency repair services.

Diesel Technician Qualifications

At least five years of automotive or diesel maintenance and repair experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and hands-on experience.
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Vocational or technical certification in automotive or diesel repair preferred.
Advanced vehicle diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
Strong experience diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, electrical systems, and related components.
Experience performing preventative maintenance, safety inspections, and annual vehicle inspections.
Ability to work independently on complex repairs with minimal supervision.
Ability to guide and support less-experienced technicians.
Valid driver\'s license required.
CDL Class B with Passenger endorsement preferred.
Ability to obtain a CDL Class B with Passenger endorsement within three months of employment; company-paid training is provided.
ASE certifications preferred.

About the Diesel Technician Position

Diesel Technician Key Responsibilities Include:

Ensure vehicles are properly maintained and safe for our passengers.
Diagnose and perform all phases of vehicle maintenance and repair.
Perform advanced diagnostics on mechanical, electrical, engine, transmission, emissions, and related vehicle systems.
Repair brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmission clutches, engines, steering systems, and other major vehicle components.
Diagnose and repair electrical, starting, charging, lighting, and electronic control systems.
Perform preventative maintenance, safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections.
Identify mechanical and safety concerns before vehicles are returned to service.
Complete complex repairs accurately and efficiently.
Evaluate completed work and verify that repairs meet First Student and regulatory standards.
Complete work orders accurately, including all labor, parts, supplies, diagnostic findings, and corrective actions.
Notify maintenance leadership of potentially dangerous equipment and recommend corrective action.
Assist with road calls, breakdowns, and mobile emergency repair services.
Support and mentor Tech I and Tech II employees with diagnostics, repairs, inspections, and technical development.
Assist maintenance leadership with troubleshooting difficult or recurring fleet issues.
Move vehicles safely between work and service areas.
Maintain an organized shop and clean work environment.
Follow all First Student safety standards, policies, procedures, and applicable DOT requirements.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Diesel Technician Qualifications

At least five years of automotive or diesel maintenance and repair experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and hands-on experience.
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Vocational or technical certification in automotive or diesel repair preferred.
Advanced vehicle diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
Strong experience diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, electrical systems, and related components.
Experience performing preventative maintenance, safety inspections, and annual vehicle inspections.
Ability to work independently on complex repairs with minimal supervision.
Ability to guide and support less-experienced technicians.
Valid driver\'s license required.
CDL Class B with Passenger endorsement preferred.
Ability to obtain a CDL Class B with Passenger endorsement within three months of employment; company-paid training is provided.
ASE certifications preferred.
Willingness to participate in and maintain required certifications through First Student\'s ASE program.
Possession of a complete mechanic\'s tool set sufficient to perform all assigned duties.
Strong computer skills and experience completing electronic work orders and maintenance records.
Strong customer service and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team.
Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and full attendance.
Strong commitment to fleet safety, quality repairs, and reliable service.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Ability to work in a maintenance shop environment with dust, dirt, and grease.
Ability to work under varying weather conditions.
Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
Ability to work in crouched, kneeling, standing, and lying positions.
Ability to work beneath vehicles while using a mechanic\'s creeper.
Ability to safely perform physically demanding maintenance and repair duties throughout the shift.
