This Is an Experienced Technician Position

First Student is hiring an experienced Fleet Technician II for our Bellport maintenance team.

This is not an entry-level mechanic position. Candidates must have at least three years of professional or military hands-on experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing vehicles or heavy equipment.

Experience must include actual repair work on multiple vehicle systems-not only oil changes, tire service, fueling, detailing, or other basic maintenance.

What You Will Do

As a Fleet Technician II, you will perform hands-on maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs that keep our school bus fleet safe, dependable, and ready for service.

Responsibilities include:

Diagnosing and repairing brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, and electrical systems
Performing preventive maintenance and scheduled fleet inspections
Troubleshooting batteries, belts, hoses, filters, fluid systems, and related components
Completing DOT inspections and vehicle-safety assessments
Using diagnostic equipment and software to identify mechanical and electrical problems
Responding to emergency or roadside service needs
Completing accurate work orders and documenting labor, repairs, and parts usage
Safely moving buses around the facility or between work areas
Maintaining personal tools, shop equipment, and a clean working environment
Assisting less-experienced technicians when needed

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have:

At least three years of professional or military hands-on vehicle or heavy-equipment maintenance and repair experience
Experience diagnosing and repairing multiple mechanical or electrical vehicle systems
A valid driver\'s license and an acceptable driving record
A current Class B CDL with passenger endorsement, or the ability and willingness to obtain the required CDL within six months of hire
The ability to meet New York State eligibility requirements for operating a school bus.
Experience using mechanic hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment
A personal mechanic tool set or the ability to build the required tool set
The ability to work independently, follow safety procedures, and accurately document completed repairs
The ability to lift at least 50 pounds and work underneath vehicles in crouched, kneeling, or prone positions

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates with:

Diesel, bus, truck, commercial-fleet, or heavy-equipment repair experience
Vocational or technical training in automotive or diesel technology
ASE certifications
Experience performing DOT inspections
Previous school bus or passenger-vehicle maintenance experience
Relevant military vehicle-maintenance experience

About the Gasoline-powered vehicle Mechanic Position

As a gas-powered vehicle Mechanic with First Student, you will help maintain and repair Ford E-350, Ford E-450, Ford Transit, and Ford 2024 EV. All with Braun wheelchair lifts and ensure vehicle readiness & safety. Other major job duties include:

Assist with preventive maintenance (PMs), safety inspections, and annual DOT maintenance inspections.
Diagnose and perform all phases of vehicle and equipment repair including brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, & transmissions.
Ensure work orders are completed accurately.
Assist with mobile emergency services.

Mechanic Qualifications

Valid driver\'s license required; Willingness to obtain CDL while employed - We train!
At least 1 year of automotive or diesel maintenance & repair experience or technical school education
Possess a mechanic\'s tool set
Willingness to participate in ASE certification program. Training, testing, and bonuses provided!

About the Position:

Key Responsibilities:

Perform maintenance and repairs on vehicles including:
- Brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, and transmissions
- Electrical components, fluid systems, filters, belts, batteries, and hoses
Conduct preventive maintenance (PMs), DOT inspections, and diagnostic troubleshooting
Maintain detailed service records, complete accurate work orders, and track parts usage
Support emergency roadside service calls when needed
Clean vehicles and maintain the shop environment
Safely move vehicles around the yard or between work areas
Repair and maintain shop tools and equipment
Other duties as assigned by management

This Is a Hands-On Senior Technician Position

First Student is hiring an experienced Fleet Tech in Charge to serve as the working lead for our Middle Island maintenance shop.

This is not a desk-only management position, and it is not an entry-level technician role. The Fleet Tech in Charge works alongside the maintenance team, performs advanced diagnostics and repairs, handles the shop\'s most difficult mechanical issues, and provides day-to-day direction to other technicians.

Candidates must have at least three years of professional or military automotive, diesel, commercial-fleet, or heavy-equipment repair experience. Candidates must also have previous experience serving as a lead technician, shop lead, foreperson, supervisor, or in a comparable role directing the work of other technicians.

What You Will Do

As the Fleet Tech in Charge, you will divide your time between advanced hands-on repair work and coordinating the daily activities of the maintenance shop.

Your responsibilities will include:

Performing advanced diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on school buses and other fleet vehicles
Diagnosing complex engine, emissions, transmission, brake, hydraulic, HVAC, electrical, and vehicle-control system problems
Working directly on vehicles in the shop and responding to roadside or emergency repair needs
Road-testing vehicles when necessary to diagnose concerns or verify completed repairs
Assigning repair work based on technician experience, shop priorities, and fleet-service needs
Reviewing technicians\' progress, repair quality, productivity, and completed work orders
Providing technical guidance and hands-on assistance when technicians encounter difficult repairs
Conducting quality-control inspections and vehicle audits
Ensuring repairs meet company standards and applicable federal and state safety requirements
Conducting daily shop huddles and fleet-readiness walks
Coaching, training, and developing technicians at multiple experience levels
Helping address technician performance or corrective-action concerns in coordination with management and Human Resources
Scheduling preventive maintenance and coordinating vehicle availability with dispatch and operations
Reviewing repair orders, parts usage, labor hours, and maintenance records
Monitoring inventory and helping ensure necessary parts, tools, and equipment are available
Identifying repeat equipment failures, repair trends, and opportunities to improve fleet reliability

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have:

At least three years of professional or military hands-on automotive, diesel, commercial-fleet, bus, truck, or heavy-equipment maintenance and repair experience
Advanced experience diagnosing and repairing multiple vehicle systems, including engines, brakes, transmissions, emissions, electrical systems, hydraulics, HVAC, and related components
At least one year of experience as a lead technician, shop lead, foreperson, maintenance supervisor, or in another role responsible for directing or reviewing technicians\' work
A demonstrated ability to perform advanced repairs personally-not only assign or oversee work
Experience planning and scheduling daily, weekly, and monthly fleet-maintenance activities
A valid driver\'s license and an acceptable driving record
A current Class B CDL with passenger endorsement, or the ability and willingness to obtain the required CDL and endorsement within three months of hire
The ability to meet New York State eligibility requirements to operate a school bus, including being at least 21 years of age
Knowledge of safe shop practices and applicable DOT, OSHA, federal, state, and company requirements
Experience using computerized diagnostic equipment, web-based maintenance systems, and standard computer applications
The ability to document repairs, review work orders, and communicate shop priorities clearly
The ability to provide technical direction, coaching, and constructive feedback to other technicians

Work Environment

At First Student, our Maintenance Technicians play a vital role in keeping our buses and vans safe, reliable, and ready for service. This role is well-suited for an experienced technician who is comfortable performing both routine and advanced repairs in a structured fleet environment, with safety as the top priority.

This position performs routine and some non-routine maintenance and repair work on buses, vans, and related vehicles in accordance with First Student standards. Work is performed with minimal supervision, including diagnosing and resolving more advanced issues, while referring complex problems when appropriate. This role may also mentor or provide informal guidance to Technician I and Technician 2 employees.

About the Diesel Technician Position

As a Diesel Technician with First Student, you will help maintain and repair a fleet of school buses to ensure they remain safe, reliable, and ready to serve students every day.

Key Responsibilities

Ensure vehicles are maintained and safe for our passengers
Diagnose and perform all phases of vehicle maintenance and repair
Repair and inspect brakes, suspension systems, drivetrains, steering components, and transmissions
Perform engine diagnostics, tune-ups, and repairs
Complete preventative maintenance services (PMs)

Valid driver\'s license required
CDL Class B or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment (company-paid training provided)
Must possess a professional mechanic\'s tool set
Willingness to participate in ASE certification program
Strong computer and documentation skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team

About the Role

The Field Supervisor monitors driver performance, supports safe and reliable service, investigates accidents and incidents, and assists with compliance reporting and operational support. This role works closely with drivers, management, school district partners, and customers to reinforce safety expectations, resolve service concerns, and ensure routes operate efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

Monitor driver pre-trip and post-trip inspections and address equipment concerns such as lights, clips, strobes, brakes, and other safety-related items.
Perform driver road checks, including observations of bus stop timing, safe driving practices, speed, railroad crossings, and overall route performance.
Observe drivers for work readiness, including uniform, safety vest, appearance, and adherence to company expectations.
Conduct IPP Safety contacts with drivers and correct safety violations in the field.
Investigate incidents and accidents by gathering facts, documenting the scene, taking photos, and completing required reports.
Attend client conferences, parent meetings, and bus coordinator meetings related to driver performance or service concerns.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.
1-2 years of supervisory experience with hourly employees preferred.
Computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Familiarity with basic vehicle mechanical processes and maintenance preferred.
Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to interact professionally with drivers, employees, customers, senior management, client representatives, union officials, and the general public.
Ability to communicate clearly in English.
Ability to work extended hours, including weekends, as needed.
Regular and consistent attendance and punctuality required.
Must have a working vehicle or reliable transportation to travel within the service area as needed.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

The Field Supervisor must be able to move throughout the office, bus yard, parking areas, schools, and other company or client locations. This role requires the ability to use standard office equipment, access filing systems and cabinets, and communicate effectively in person, by phone, and in writing.

This position may require the ability to:

Drive a company or personal vehicle for driver observations, school district meetings, and other company-related purposes.
Use a full range of hearing, speech, and vision.
Use manual dexterity for handling paperwork and completing reports.
