Supervises employees who maintain, repair and service all vehicles and equipment. Assigns vehicles to authorized personnel and maintains records of use, mileage, maintenance, repairs and service. Coordinates the day-to-day operations of a groups of Technicians assigning, monitoring and reviewing progress and accuracy of work, directing efforts and providing technical guidance on more complex issues. Inspects and reviews the results of maintenance and repair works, monitors repairs and performs vehicle audits to ensure technicians adhere to safety, regulatory and appearance standards. Review any equipment failures and replacements to identify trends and monitor key expense induces.In the state of Washington, this position is considered a safety-sensitive position and is therefore subject to drug and alcohol testing, including cannabis.$39.17/hrMajor Responsibilities- Oversee repair diagnostics on more complex matters and provide coaching, where necessary; may be required to road test vehicles to determine necessary repairs. Maintain advanced knowledge of engine, emission systems, transmission, brake, hydraulic and electrical systems to perform advanced preventive and repair maintenance functions on vehicles and equipment, on site and on the road, including: engine chassis repair and maintenance; knowledge of vehicle body control systems, including hydraulics and electrical systems to maintain and repair vehicles in a timely and safe manner; knowledge of heating and air conditioning systems to effectively diagnose and repair complex heating and cooling systems in vehicles in a timely and safe manner.
- Supervise technicians in maintenance shop, including responsibilities as conducting daily shop huddles; fleet walks; coaching/counseling/training all Technician levels on performance/corrective action, when necessary; make hiring/termination decisions in concert with Location Management and/or Human Resources; conduct employee training and performance evaluations; evaluate and make recommendations for merit increase, promotion and job changes, as appropriate.
- Oversee maintenance shop inventory control system to ensure necessary equipment and parts levels are maintained and purchases are within budget. Review and approve expenses that are within scope of approval level; refer larger expenses or major repairs to manager as appropriate.
- Schedules and administers fleet maintenance, assists in troubleshooting complex problems with equipment. Communicates availability of vehicles for service with dispatch, maintenance manager and/or other operations personnel.
- Conduct Quality Control Inspections, track issues and resolution to ensure all work is properly completed in accordance with Company's safety and compliance procedures and federal and state regulations.
- Provides direction to all Technician levels, and ensures that all repair and maintenance is performed in a safe, efficient and timely manner.
- Works closely with General Manager/Location Manager and or Maintenance Manger providing status of maintenance and budget requirements. Reviews repair orders.
- Identify training opportunities and, as necessary, document issues and constructively discuss corrective action, as needed, with technician.
- Monitor operational performance and efficiency and take action to redirect activities appropriately.
- Supervises automotive fueling. May arrange services for building and ground keeping.
- Assists Lower level Technicians with labor work as needed or required.
- May order fuel for all vehicles, order parts, and subcontract repair work.
- Performs hands on work activities as requested or required.
- Completes special projects as assigned.
Minimum Education or Certifications Required
- High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair (preferred)
- Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required (or expected within 3 months of hire)
- State inspection license (if required)
- ASE Certification preferred. Must participate in ASE testing program (expected to have Master Ascent within 6 months of hire)
Minimum Experience or Skills Required
- Advanced mechanical aptitude and 3+ years of automotive or diesel repair experience required
- 1 year of supervisory experience in a lead technician role, and/or supervisor or other management role requiring thorough knowledge of safe working practices, DOT, OSHA and other federal and state regulations
- Solid aptitude in planning and scheduling maintenance repairs (Daily, Weekly, Monthly)
- Valid driver's license
- Strong experience with computers, web-based applications, and computerized diagnostics
- Strong customer service and organizational skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Builds labor relations with unionized employees (if applicable) and addresses and resolves requests and situations
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Maintenance Shop environment with dust, dirt and grease conditions
- Ability to work under all weather conditions
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
- Ability to work in a crouched position or on back, lying on mechanic's creeper, beneath motor vehicle equipment
